With all of the space in this blog that has been devoted to the idea of “big data,” we thought it only prudent to draw your attention to an article that highlights some of its limitations.

Those who have read Moneyball (and not just watched the movie!) will remember that the author, Paul DePodesta, helped the Oakland A’s to usher in the “big data” era in baseball–a trend that’s now spreading rapidly to other professional sports. In particular, his observations about how one’s personal biases can affect the interpretation of numbers is a caution worth keeping in mind.
